Renewing and Extending Your Work Permit

If your work permit is expiring and you're still working in Canada, you must apply to extend your status. Here is what you need to know.

When to Apply

  • The 30-Day Rule: You should apply at least 30 days before your current permit expires. Many agents recommend applying even earlier (up to 3 months).
  • Maintained Status: If you apply for an extension before your current permit expires, you can continue working under the same conditions while you wait for a decision (formerly known as 'implied status').

Applying for an Extension

  1. Employer Compliance: Ensure your employer has submitted a new offer of employment and paid any required fees.
  2. Complete Documentation: Be ready with your current work permit, passport, and proof that you are still meeting the conditions of your original permit.
  3. Restoration of Status: If you miss the deadline, you have 90 days to apply for restoration of status, during which you cannot work or study.
⚠️ Important

If your passport is expiring soon, your work permit extension will only be granted up to the passport's expiry date. Renew your passport first if possible.
