Moving from Study Permit to PR

Many international students in Canada aim to stay and build their lives here. The transition from a study permit to permanent residency is a well-defined path.

The Major Path: PGWP to PR

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): After completing your studies, apply for a PGWP to gain valuable Canadian work experience.
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): Once you have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada, you can apply for PR through the CEC stream of Express Entry.
  • Provincial Streams for Graduates: Many provinces have specific PNP streams for international students who graduated from a local institution.

Important Considerations

  1. Work Experience Level: Your Canadian work experience must be at TEER level 0, 1, 2, or 3 to count for most PR programs.
  2. Maintain Legal Status: Ensure your study permit and work permit are always valid during the transition phase.
💡 Tip

Start gaining relevant work experience as soon as you get your PGWP to meet the one-year requirement as quickly as possible.
