What is Express Entry?
Canada's Express Entry is an online application system utilized by the federal government to manage immigration requests from skilled workers globally. It provides an efficient, points-based pathway for economic immigrants seeking Canadian permanent residence.
The Core Programs
Express Entry is an application management framework for three specific federal economic immigration pathways. These include the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) for professionals, the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) for those with recent Canadian work history, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST) for qualified tradespeople. Candidates must meet the specific baseline requirements of at least one program to be eligible.
The Application Process
Prospective immigrants begin by determining their eligibility and creating an online profile, which formally places them into the global Express Entry pool. Applicants have 60 days to complete and submit their initial profile information. The Canadian government then uses this data to figure out which specific programs the candidate qualifies for.
Comprehensive Ranking System
Once in the pool, candidates are evaluated using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The CRS is a rigorous points-based mechanism that scores profiles based on core human capital factors like age, education, language proficiency, and work experience. The system ranks all eligible profiles, ensuring that only the most highly qualified individuals rise to the top of the pool.
Rounds of Invitations
The government regularly conducts official rounds of invitations to select candidates from the pool. During these draws, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announces a CRS score cut-off and issues an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to the highest-ranking candidates. The frequency, size, and type of these draws are posted online at the time of the round.
Submitting an Application
When a candidate receives an ITA, they are granted exactly 60 days to submit their comprehensive permanent residence application. This step requires filling out detailed mandatory forms, paying processing and biometrics fees, and uploading clear scans of all personalized checklist documents. Failure to provide a complete application within this strict window will result in the expiration of the invitation.
Category-Based Selection
Beyond general draws, Canada utilizes category-based selection rounds to meet identified national economic goals. These targeted invitations prioritize candidates with strong French-language proficiency or distinct work experience in high-demand domestic sectors. Current priority fields include healthcare, STEM, designated trades, education, and transport occupations.
Education and Job Offers
While a valid job offer is required for the Federal Skilled Trades Program, it is not strictly necessary for the FSWP or CEC pathways. However, securing a job offer can provide a candidate with valuable additional selection criteria points in the CRS. Similarly, pursuing higher post-secondary education significantly boosts a candidate's overall ranking potential.
Managing Profile Validity
Express Entry profiles remain active in the candidate pool for a maximum of 12 months. If an applicant is not invited to apply within this year, their profile automatically expires and is permanently removed from the system. Individuals wishing to stay in the system must submit a completely new profile and be accepted into the pool again.
