Your First Week Survival Guide
Congratulations on landing! Your first week is all about setting up the legal and financial foundations for your new life in Canada.
The Big Three
- Social Insurance Number (SIN): Apply for your SIN as soon as possible. You need it to work and access government programs. You can do this in person at a Service Canada office or online.
- Health Insurance: Most provinces have a waiting period for provincial health coverage (OHIP, MSP, etc.). Apply immediately and ensure you have private travel insurance to cover you during the gap.
- Bank Account: Open a 'Newcomer' bank account. Many banks offer free banking for the first year and even a small cash bonus for new immigrants.
Other Essentials
- Phone Plan: Get a Canadian SIM card. Mobile data is expensive, so compare plans carefully.
- Library Card: It's free and gives you access to books, movies, and sometimes even free courses or museum passes.
⚠️ Important
Keep your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) document safe. You'll need it for many of these applications until your actual PR card arrives.
